A dedication to Filby, Norfolk

A little while ago on one of my little tours of the castles in East Anglia, I came across an absolute PEACH of a village in the Norfolk Broads, which you're all about to hear about...

This village is just East of the villages of Fleggburgh and Billockby (No those aren't places from Gulliver's travels...) based on the A1064 running East-West.

My last visit was in late August 2022, then my latest this month, and on both occasions (unsurprisingly tbh) August in bloom was happening, where the whole village appears to go into this unspoken flower competition. This visit though, I have pictures of it, which hopefully you'll appreicate.

To paint a picture of travelling through most of Norfolk broads, which is pretty in a a kind of raw naturilitic vibe. The endless reed-banked rivers, 90's looking metal bridges with small marinas nearby, not to forget the occasional farmers fields, the long winding roads turning into unpleasantly sharp 90 degree bends. Then you arrive at Filby.

Forget the normal village which at best would have summer fete vibes, but only for a very special summer days. Here though, the lamposts (normally a bland, functional object) are adorned with large hanging baskets of yellow, red and purple. Every. single. one of them.

But no sir, that is not enough. The bus stops, the benches, a Pavillion. Heck even the war memorial - which isn't visible through google maps btw - on Pound Lane is leagues above what you'd get at most other villages.

But wait there's MORE! There's occasional road-side flower bed, and every other house joining in the fray with their own floral brand... the main thing that really got me was the 2023 Swan sign (even though the 2022 version was cooler), honestly whoever thought of using swans as 2's has done the world a service.

Perhaps I'm getting a little carried away with it, it's just a flower show - Nevetheless I saluate you folks you're doing a great job.

So if you're ever going from Norwich to Caister (or vice versa) the extra 10-20 minutes is worth it.

Until then

Oscar
