A dedication to Filby, Norfolk

Image
A little while ago on one of my little tours of the castles in East Anglia, I came across an absolute PEACH of a village in the Norfolk Broads, which you're all about to hear about... This village is just East of the villages of Fleggburgh and Billockby (No those aren't places from Gulliver's travels...) based on the A1064 running East-West. My last visit was in late August 2022, then my latest this month, and on both occasions (unsurprisingly tbh) August in bloom was happening, where the whole village appears to go into this unspoken flower competition. This visit though, I have pictures of it, which hopefully you'll appreicate. To paint a picture of travelling through most of Norfolk broads, which is pretty in a a kind of raw naturilitic vibe. The endless reed-banked rivers, 90's looking metal bridges with small marinas nearby, not to forget the occasional farmers fields, the long winding roads turning into unpleasantly sharp 90 degree bends. Then you arrive at

Selling books...

Kinda a weird post this, but nevertheless probably something you'll have thought about doing - perhaps even recently - as the world turns to audiobooks and podcasts. So after a couple of lukewarm car-boot sales and a handful of books still left unsold I turned to "weBuyAnyBooks" type apps, and here's a quick summary of each of the apps, just cause... The books in question: For these 11 books I tried 4 apps and the results are in the table and screenshots below Table columns (left to right) total for books, no. of books, average per book, average market price %, and no. of books with highest market value. This shows that Ziffit tops the leaderboard in many respects - although this is quite a small sample size in retrospect - purely based on the value offered for each of those books. However SellItBack does have the advantage of giving offers for more of those books and having a decent market value (based on the ratio of price offered versus maximum price from all selle

Middy railway footpath

Image
Well hey there, Prepare yourself for another edition of " Oscar walks far and regrets it the day after ", with pictures of course. Emboldened by my previous efforts on the last trail (not to mention the recovered feet) I set my sights on yet another  hike of sorts. Except this time around preferring not to use public transport to return - the train ticket and taxi fare from Stowmarket to Hoxne was £26... One of the nearer paths to me is called the Middy (Mid Suffolk) railway footpath, which probably has something to do with an old railway line, but I shan't venture to butcher it's historic background. Nevertheless, this runs from just south of Wethersett, down south but mostly westwards and ends near Haughley. Based on some quick calculations, it is roughly 7.5 miles long (or 12km), based on the view of the path from the stitched StreetMap images below.  So following some quick calcs I figured I'd easily be able to walk this trail, and more importantly back in a

Mid-Suffolk trail

I recently happened across a YouTube video detailing on guy's journey through the appalachian mountain trial (all 2200 miles) which I "think" was partially from his disappointment in life circumstances or discontent at the state-of the world. I guess you call call it a coming of age type tale, but gimme 20-30 years to figure out if that's true or not... Either-way, from it I recognized my own unhappiness (yadda yadda) and thought "hey this is a cool idea, I could do that too" 2 hours of internet searches later, I figured 2200 miles of hiking over 6 months, and buying a bunch of gear I wasn't 100% familiar with was probably not the smartest idea. But what if there was another trial near where I live that wasn't so ridiculously long and could be done in a day? There is as it turns out. It's approximately 20 miles and not considered too difficult to walk by a couple of folks. https://ldwa.org.uk/ldp/members/show_path.php?menu_type=S&path_name=M
